Before I started traveling, I thought that backpackers barely used their phones. In fact, this was totally different; the people used their phones quite often. And however I tried to use mine as less as I could, I found out that some apps were very useful. You can read about my favorites below.
Maps.me is a so-called map app. I used it quite often during my journey. You can download different maps from countries all over the world with mobile data or wifi. Thereafter, you can use them offline. It makes it possible that you can search a specific route wherever you are and makes losing way history!
By using Skyscanner you find cheap flight tickets from airports all over the world in an easy and quick way.
You can easily and quick find your place of stay with Booking.com and Hostelworld. When you use the app, you are sure having a place to sleep when you arrive in a city. By selecting different filter options you can find a residence (hostel, hotel etcetera) which meets exactly with your wishes. To be honest, I rather use Booking.com than Hostelworld. Because most of the times you can cancle your booking on Booking.com for free. This is not possible at Hostelworld.
You easily book your taxi drive to a new destination with Grab, Uber and Gojek. When you book a taxi with one of these apps, you pay often less money then when you use a taxi at a taxi company. With Grab, Uber and Gojek you can also choose which type of transport you want to use. For example a motorbike or a car. Be aware that you cannot use the so-called taxi apps in every country yet. In Cambodia or Laos, for example, you can better get a tuk-tuk taxi. Besides, in some countries (Bali, Indonesia) using the taxi apps is forbidden. In Vietnam, many people use Grab.
With XE Currency you are informed of the last exchanges. In an easy way the app calculates a certain currency into yours. You can make a list with currencies you need and in a clear list you can see de different exchange.
Packpoint is a useful app when you are making a packing list. In the app you can, for example, fill in where you are going to and in which periods. Thereafter, the app says which stuff you can’t forget when you are going to the country you decided to go to.
Map your journey in an interactive way with Polarsteps. By doing this, you will create a beautiful keepsake to your travel. Besides, with Polarsteps you can inform the people at home about your travel experiences. On Polarsteps, you can, among other things, post pictures and you can add a map with your travel route.

7 handige backpack apps
Voordat ik begon met backpacken, dacht ik dat backpackers nauwelijks bezig waren met hun telefoon. Die gedachte klopte niet helemaal met de werkelijkheid. En hoewel ik zo min mogelijk op mijn telefoon probeerde te zitten, kwam ik er achter dat sommige apps best handig zijn. Mijn favorieten zette ik op een rijtje.
- Maps.me
Een kaartenapp waarbij je met mobiele data of wifi kaarten van over de hele wereld download. Deze kaarten kun je vervolgens offline gebruiken. Zo kun je altijd de route naar een bepaalde plek opzoeken en is verdwalen verleden tijd!
Skyscanner
Met Skyscanner vind je op een snelle, eenvoudige manier goedkope vluchten van vliegvelden van over de hele wereld.
- Booking.com / Hostelworld
Met Booking.com en Hostelworld zoek je op een snelle en makkelijke manier je verblijfsplek. Zo ben je verzekerd van een slaapplek, wanneer je in een bepaalde stad aankomt. Door middel van de filteropties, die je kunt invullen, vind je een hostel die precies aan jouw wensen voldoet.
- Grab/Uber/Gojek
Met Grab, Uber en Gojek boek je eenvoudig een taxi die jou snel naar je nieuwe bestemming brengt. Wanneer je boekt met een van deze apps, ben je vaak veel goedkoper uit dan wanneer je een taxi bij een taxibedrijf bestelt. Met deze zogenaamde taxi-apps kun je ook kiezen met wat voor vervoermiddel je vervoert wilt worden, bijvoorbeeld met een motorbike of een auto. Let op: de ‘taxi-apps’ zijn nog niet in alle landen actief (in Cambodja en Laos kun je beter een tuk-tuk nemen) en in sommige landen zelfs verboden, zoals op Bali. In Vietnam wordt veel gebruik gemaakt van Grab.
- XE Currency
Met XE Currency ben je op de hoogte van de laatste veranderingen op het gebied van valuta. Op een eenvoudige wijze berekent de app een bepaalde munteenheid om in die van jouw land. Je kunt een lijstje maken met munteenheden die jij nodig hebt en in een overzichtelijke lijst zie je de verschillende valuta dan staan.
- Packpoint
Packpoint is een handige app als je een paklijst gaat maken. In de app vul je onder meer de plaats waar je naartoe gaat en de periode waarin je reist in. Vervolgens geeft hij aan welke spullen absoluut niet in je baggage mogen ontbreken.
- Polarsteps
Met Polarsteps breng je je reis op een interactieve manier in kaart. Op die manier creëer je een mooi aandenken aan jouw reis en hou je het thuisfront op de hoogte van jouw reisavonturen. Op Polarsteps kun je onder meer foto’s plaatsen en een kaartje met jouw reisroute toevoegen.
